Why I painted the Lion and the Lamb
On roar without violence, and the meadow as a theology.
The lion and the lamb together is one of Scripture's most quietly radical images — a roar without violence, a meekness without fear.
In the studio I kept returning to the meadow: not as decoration, but as theology. The grass under their feet is the promise that the old order has ended.
Painting them required restraint. Too much drama and the image becomes a poster; too little and the wonder slips away.
